I know you just got so excited because you thought I finally got it together and got a new CD recorded. Well, not exactly. I have been playing and singing with another band called Kingdom Brothers and we did just get done recording a new CD called Shine a Light. Don't worry I haven't abndoned the Chris Shepherd Band and I do hope to have a new project soon but for now the new Kingdom Brothers traks will keep you more than satisfied. Check out the site at myspace.com/kingdombrothers. We will be playing this Friday the 16th at BBs Blues Jazz and Soups downtown. Stop by and pick up a copy of the new CD or go to the site and send Bob a message that you want to order one or two or three.

Peace and blessings

Why 40 days of Lent
 csband, posted 02/20/08 02:07 PM comments 0
The word lent comes from the “lengthening” of hours of daylight as we move from winter into spring. We can think of it as a time of moving from the darkness of winter into the light of spring. Other languages often use a name for this season that is derived from their word for forty. Why forty days of lent? Well Jesus fasted and prayed for forty days in the desert but he could have stayed there for any number of days like thirty or twenty. You have to remember back to the old testament. Noah was in the Ark while it rained for forty days and forty nights. Moses was up on Mt Sinai for forty days when he received the ten commandments. The Israelites wondered in the desert for forty years. Numbers very often have a symbolic meaning in the Old Testament. One possibility for the use of forty is that a woman usually carries her unborn child for about forty weeks before the new life of the fruit of her womb is revealed to the world. A not so comfortable time of preparing for something new. Noah’s forty lead to the rebirth of a sinful world cleansed by the flood water. Moses’ forty was the birth of a people of the covenant, from a nomadic to a new settled life in the Promise Land. Jesus’ forty was the birth of a new Israel set free from sin by the Holy Spirit instead of the Law. Easter is fast approaching. Let us be diligent in resisting the devil’s temptations to take us out of our desert preparation for something new. The Devil tempted Jesus to turn the stones into bread because he knew Jesus was hungry. Let’s not let him tempt us to give in to our desires of the flesh no matter how natural they may be. We need and use material goods but they can become more important than the bread of life that sustains us for eternity. No one would think it was strange for an athlete to fast from doughnuts and soda. It would make since that he would work out with weights in order to increase his endurance and strength. Maybe he would get up extra early to make sure he had time to do his morning workout. Let us continue our spiritual workout so we can increase the strength and endurance of our faith and hopefully we will rise to a more faith filled life with Christ when we celebrate our rising with Christ through baptism on Easter day.
