| Why 40 days of Lent | csband, February 02/20/08, 2008 |
The word lent comes from the “lengthening” of hours of daylight as we move from winter into spring. We can think of it as a time of moving from the darkness of winter into the light of spring. Other languages often use a name for this season that is derived from their word for forty. Why forty days of lent? Well Jesus fasted and prayed for forty days in the desert but he could have stayed there for any number of days like thirty or twenty. You have to remember back to the old testament. Noah was in the Ark while it rained for forty days and forty nights. Moses was up on Mt Sinai for forty days when he received the ten commandments. The Israelites wondered in the desert for forty years. Numbers very often have a symbolic meaning in the Old Testament. One possibility for the use of forty is that a woman usually carries her unborn child for about forty weeks before the new life of the fruit of her womb is revealed to the world. A not so comfortable time of preparing for something new. Noah’s forty lead to the rebirth of a sinful world cleansed by the flood water. Moses’ forty was the birth of a people of the covenant, from a nomadic to a new settled life in the Promise Land. Jesus’ forty was the birth of a new Israel set free from sin by the Holy Spirit instead of the Law. Easter is fast approaching. Let us be diligent in resisting the devil’s temptations to take us out of our desert preparation for something new. The Devil tempted Jesus to turn the stones into bread because he knew Jesus was hungry. Let’s not let him tempt us to give in to our desires of the flesh no matter how natural they may be. We need and use material goods but they can become more important than the bread of life that sustains us for eternity. No one would think it was strange for an athlete to fast from doughnuts and soda. It would make since that he would work out with weights in order to increase his endurance and strength. Maybe he would get up extra early to make sure he had time to do his morning workout. Let us continue our spiritual workout so we can increase the strength and endurance of our faith and hopefully we will rise to a more faith filled life with Christ when we celebrate our rising with Christ through baptism on Easter day.

| Christmas | csband, December 12/30/07, 2007 |
Happy new year. The stores have quickly forgotten the baby Jesus and have moved on to Valentines Day candy displays. I went to a home improvement store a couple of days before Christmas and they had already started putting all their tool displays away to make room for a massive display of totes. I guess that is when people go into a buying frenzy looking for large plastic containers to put all their extra stuuff that they got for Christmas. The truth is that we are actually still in the Christmas season. That's right, for most churches that follow a liturgical calander it will be Christmas season until Jan 6 when the feast of the Epiphany is celebrated. Epiphany commemorates the beginning of the proclamation of the gospel—Christ's manifestation to the nations, as shown in three different events: the visit of the Magi, the baptism of Jesus, and the turning of water into wine. In the Western tradition, the Magi predominate. But in the Eastern churches, Jesus' baptism tends to be the primary theme. The traditioonal Christmas carol "Twelve days of Christmas" is actually not about the twelve days before Christmas but after. It is a twelve day celebration but most people are partied out by Dec26 and don't pay much attention. Well now that we have spent too much, ate too much, and probably fought or complained too much let us make a new years resolution to rededicate our lives to Christ. Let us remember that like the Magi we were a far off people called to come and worship the Lord in humility. Let us remember our baptism and the power it gives us as children of God to become a new creation and rise to new life in Christ as Paul says. Let us meditate on the the miracle of the wedding feast at Cana to remind us that anything is possible with God. That we ordinary vessels of water can be made into God's very best when given over to Christ.

| Advent, The Coming | csband, December 12/12/07, 2007 |
Well here we are in the midst of the Advent season. Advent means coming. So what is coming? Not what but who!. This is a time for us to be contemplating and meditating on the coming of Christ. We prepare our hearts to receive the incarnate (made flesh) word of God as a small child in a manger. Jesus humbled himself and came to us as a helpless baby. That's how much he loves us. He was willing to become one of us and dwell among us and deal with all the day to day trials we all face here on earth. Prpare the way of the Lord! John the Baptist gives us the advice we need to properly get ourselves ready for the coming of Christ. As we prepare to celebrate Christ's birth let us prepare the way for him in our hearts. What does the path to our heart look like? Is it covered with trash is there a spiritual road block that keeps us from receiving the fullness of the grace God is trying to give us? Do we need to clear away the brush and fallen debris from the storms of our past? » Read more... (comments: 0) |
